Benjamin Alire Sáenz (born 16 August 1954) is an award-winning American poet, novelist and writer of children's books. He was born at Old Picacho, New Mexico, the fourth of seven children, and was raised on a small farm near Mesilla, New Mexico. He graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1972. That fall, he entered St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado where he received a B.A. degree in Humanities and Philosophy in 1977. He studied Theology at the University of Louvain in Leuven, Belgium from 1977 to 1981. He was a priest for a few years in El Paso, Texas before leaving the order. In 1985, he returned to school, and studied English and Creative Writing at the University of Texas at El Paso where he earned an M.A. degree in Creative Writing. He then spent a year at the University of Iowa as a PhD student in American Literature. A year later, he was awarded a Wallace E. Stegner fellowship. While at Stanford University under the guidance of Denise Levertov, he completed his first book of poems, Calendar of Dust, which won an American Book Award in 1992. He entered the Ph.D. program at Stanford and continued his studies for two more years. Before completing his Ph.D., he moved back to the border and began teaching at the University of Texas at El Paso in the bilingual MFA program. His first novel, Carry Me Like Water was a saga that brought together the Victorian novel and the Latin American tradition of magic realism and received much critical attention. In The Book of What Remains (Copper Canyon Press, 2010), his fifth book of poems, he writes to the core truth of life's ever-shifting memories. Set along the Mexican border, the contrast between the desert's austere beauty and the brutality of border politics mirrors humanity's capacity for both generosity and cruelty. In 2005, he curated a show of photographs by Julian Cardona. He continues to teach in the Creative Writing Department at the University of Texas at El Paso.

În sfârșit, în sfârșit, în sfârșit! Doamne, de când am așteptat cartea aceasta, because I have loved Ari & Dante în prima carte pe care, deși am citit-o în română, mi-am cumpărat-o și în engleză. De fapt, continuarea, Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World a apărut și la noi, la prietenii de la Editura Trei (o găsiți AICI), și m-am bucurat foarte mult anunțul (iar primul volum este disponibil pe site, AICI, la un preț foarte bun). Cu toate acestea, eu chiar cred că volumul de față poate fi citit și separat, asta fără a ști, neapărat, ce s-a întâmplat în primul volum; cu toate acestea, ar fi păcat să te privezi de cât de minunată și înălțătoare și luminoasă și drăguță și superbă este și prima carte, nu doar a doua. Recunosc, dacă ar fi să fac o comparație, primul volum mi-a plăcut mult mai mult, pe când al doilea mi s-a părut, cum să zic, puțin cam prea lung (are aproximativ două sute de pagini în plus), și chiar și Benjamin Alire Sáenz a afirmat că nu s-a gândit să scrie o continuare când s-a apucat de prima carte. Cu alte cuvinte, n-avea de gând ca povestea frumoasă și emoționantă dintre Ari & Dante să se desfășoare în cadrul unei dilogii. Cu toate acestea, eu pur și simplu am citit cartea pentru modul în care scrie Benjamin Alire Sáenz - subtil, profund, poetic, emoționant, ca un adevărat poet. N-am pus preț pe acțiune, deși m-am bucurat că povestea dintre Ari & Dante a continuat într-un mod atât de frumos, și totuși atât de neașteptat.

Am vrut să-mi iau această carte pentru că, după cum am spus, primul volum a avut un impact colosal asupra mea, întrucât mi-a arătat că, într-adevăr, există speranță, există iubire, există prietenie și curaj și devotament și mulțumire și tot ce frumos și bun în lumea aceasta. Știu că primul volum l-am citit dintr-o singură suflare, imediat ce l-am cumpărat. M-am așezat pe o canapea în mall și am rămas acolo de la început până la sfârșit. Ari & Dante vor rămâne întotdeauna în inima mea, acești doi băieți curajoși și frumoși încercați de sentimente dintre cele mai efervescente, cele mai reale, care-și caută rostul într-o lume plină de frici și întuneric și, Doamne, mă simt atât de pios scriind această recenzie, atât de impresionist, încât nici nu știu dacă reușesc să transmit întocmai ce am simțit citind această carte. Ce bucurie am avut când am văzut că am ajuns și am pus mâna pe ea, fiindcă chiar voiam s-o citesc de îndată ce a apărut (a, și să nu mai zic de faptul că am găsit-o la un preț de nerefuzat, la prietenii de la Books Express). De altfel, mă bucur foarte mult că am citit-o în engleză, deși știu că și traducerea primei cărți mi s-a părut deosebit de bun - în engleză, frazele au o altă cadență, parcă au o altă „realitate”, parcă reușesc să redea mult mai bine anumite sentimente, stări, emoții. Iar autorul, Benjamin Alire Sáenz, chiar știe cum să dea forță cuvintelor - cum să le transforme în magie.

“Stories were living inside us. I think we were born to tell our stories. After we died, our stories would survive. Maybe it was our stories that fed the universe the energy it needed to keep on giving life. Maybe all we were meant to do on this earth was to keep on telling stories. Our stories - and the stories of the people we loved.”

Bineînțeles, n-am să vă vorbesc despre acțiune, chestii de-acest gen, n-am să vă zic ce se întâmplă în carte. Deși, sincer, chiar se întâmplă foarte multe, iar decorurile sunt des schimbate. Bineînțeles, înainte de toate se pune accent pe relația dintre Ari & Dante, despre trăirile pe care aceștia le au, transformările prin care le trec, conflictele interioare, zbuciumul tinereții, efervescența acelor clipe care se dovedesc a fi memorabile. O, cât de frumos scrie Benjamin Alire Sáenz, cât de profund și liric și duios. Ador, pur și simplu, ador cum scrie. Aș vrea să-i citesc și volumele de poezii și să mă pierd în cuvintele pe care le folosește, în subtilitatea pe care o are și profunzimea pe care reușește s-o contureze. Ari & Dante, îmi veți rămâne prieteni pe vecie, și știu că, undeva în viitor, mă voi întoarce la voi - să văd ce-ați mai făcut, unde ați mai ajuns, cum au mai decurs lucrurile între voi. Doi băieți plini de curaj, plini de speranță, doi băieți care înfruntă lumea în care trăiesc, care se luptă cu prejudecățile și care, în cele din urmă, împreună, cresc în dimensiuni, demonstrându-ne că iubirea adevărată are să învingă întotdeauna, biruind peste toate nedreptățile, toate răutățile lumii. O poveste care te inspiră, care te emoționează și care îți dă curaj. O poveste memorabilă despre frumusețea clipelor și intensitatea acestora!

Ah, da, știți că se va face și serial (sau film, nu știu sigur)? Abia aștept. Mai mult Ari & Dante, mai multe emoții, mai multe trăiri. Oh, da, sunt pregătit să fiu distruuuuus! După cum v-ați dat probabil seama, vă recomand cu cea mai mare încredere cele două cărți. Benjamin Alire Sáenz scrie superb, absolut magistral, un poet care scrie proză și reușește să păstreze lirismul drept licență artistică. Mereu mi-a plăcut proza lirică, dozată corespunzător, dar care surprinde și acțiune și personaje complexe, iar prietenii noștri, Ari & Dante, oh, da, sunt foarte, foarte complecși! Și foarte minunați și tandri, profunzi și inteligenți. Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World este cartea pe care știu că nu o voi uita vreodată, și pe care o voi păstra întotdeauna în inimă. De fapt, vorbesc despre serie, pentru că și prima carte (care mi-a plăcut, după cum am spus, mai mult) - Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - este foarte, foarte bună. Deci, să n-o mai lungesc, vă recomand amândouă cărțile, însă nu știu de ce am certitudinea că fie vi le doriți deja, fie le-ați citit (măcar primul volum). Sunt lecturi memorabile, care ar trebui să treacă prin mâinile oricărui cititor împătimit: pentru că le veți iubi, le veți adora, le veți prețui și, de asemenea, veți reveni în mod constant la ele! Să aveți doar lecturi faine!
